The series initially started as a parody of the 1996 Nintendo video game Super Mario 64, originally uses a hacked ROM of Super Mario 64 to animate the series, though Garry's Mod is also used for animating later seasons.

The YouTube channel for the series was created in 2009, and it officially debuted on May 7, 2011, as Super Mario 64 Bloopers, then was renamed to SMG4 on February 25, 2017. SMG4 (formerly Super Mario 64 Bloopers), also known as SuperMarioGlitchy4, is an Australian adult animated parody web series created by Luke Lerdwichagul.
